The Second Battle of Fallujah was the bloodiest battle of the entire conflict for American troops, and is notable for being the first major engagement of the Iraq War that was fought solely against insurgents as opposed to the government military forces of the former Ba'athist Iraq. 'The Dawn'), was an American-led offensive of the Iraq War that lasted roughly six weeks, starting 7 November 2004. When the coalition fought their way into the centre of the city, the Iraqi Interim Government requested that the city's control be transferred over to an Iraqi-run local security force, which then began stockpiling weapons and building complex defenses across the city through mid-2004. The Second Battle of Fallujah, codenamed Operation Phantom Fury, and Operation al-Fajr (Arabic:, lit. Earlier, in April 2004, coalition forces fought the First Battle of Fallujah in an attempt to capture or kill insurgent elements who were considered responsible for the 2004 Fallujah ambush, which resulted in the deaths of four private military contractors of Blackwater. Operation Phantom Fury was a joint American, Iraq, and British Military campaign during the Iraq War that crushed the Islamic insurgents in Fallujah, Iraq. Four American contractors were killed, and their bodies were des- ecrated and hung from a bridge over the Euphrates River. Operation Phantom Fury was the second major coalition effort in Fallujah. Aristocrat", a tomato with a motif similar to Mr. Heinz Company released a clock with the figure of "Mr. Many companies have used talking clocks as a novelty item to promote their brand. In addition, one manufacturer purportedly produced a clock that would announce the time upon detecting a user's whistling signal. Manufacturers of such clocks include Sharp, Panasonic, RadioShack, and Reizen. There are over 150 tabletop clocks and 50 types of watches that talk. Talking clocks have found a natural home as an assistive technology for people who are blind or visually impaired. Talking clocks can also be used with children whose learning disabilities may be partially offset by the reinforcement provided by hearing the time as well as seeing it. One of the latest ones, the "Talking Clever Clock", includes a quiz button which asks questions such as "What time is it?", "What time will it be in an hour?", and "How much time has passed between 1:00 and 2:30?" Other educational talking clocks come in a kit designed to be assembled by children. Several other clocks of this type followed, including one featuring Thomas the Tank Engine. The first talking clock to be used for this purpose was the Mattel "Mattel-a-Time Talking Clock" of 1968. Uses and purposes Teaching timetelling Īfter the telephone time service, the next practical application of the talking clock was in the teaching of timetelling to children. As a futuristic design object even its LCD was hidden at the bottom, requiring the user to push the clock's top to hear it talk.Ĭurrent talking clocks often include many more features than just giving the time in these, the ability to speak the time is part of a wide range of voice capabilities, such as reading the weather and other information to the user. released their famous pyramid-shaped talking clock, the Pyramid Talk. The tiny controls to turn off alarm or set functions are hard to reach under a small bottom lid. It also had stopwatch and countdown timer modes. The alarm spoke the time and also had a melody " Boccherini's Minuet" after 5 minutes the alarm repeated with the words "Please hurry!". Its silver transistor-radio-like case contained complex LSI circuitry with 3 SMD ICs (likely clock CPU, speech CPU and sound IC), producing a Speak&Spell-like synthetic voice. In 1979 Sharp released the world's first quartz-based talking clock, the Talking Time CT-660E (German version CT-660G). In 1968, the first truly portable talking clock, the Mattel-a-Time Talking Clock, was released. This clock used a record, needle, and tone arm to produce its sound. In 1954, Ted Duncan, Inc., released the Hickory Dickory Clock, a crank toy intended for children. This type of talking time service is still around, and more than a million calls per year are received for the NIST's Telephone Time-of-Day Service. London began a similar service three years later. On its first day, February 14, 1933, more than 140,000 calls were received. In 1933, the first practical use of talking clocks was seen when Ernest Esclangon created a talking telephone time service in Paris, France. However, these belts were often broken by the hand-tightening required, and all attempts to reproduce the celluloid ribbon have so far failed. It is on display at the National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia, Pennsylvania.Īlthough there have been rumors that other talking clocks may have been produced afterward, it is not until around 1910 that another talking clock was introduced, when Bernhard Hiller created a clock that used a belt with a recording on it to announce the time. In 1992, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized this as the oldest known sound recording that was playable (though that status now rests with a phonautogram of Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville, recorded in 1857). Lambert used lead in place of Edison's soft tinfoil. Around 1878, Frank Lambert invented a machine that used a voice recorded on a lead cylinder to call out the hours. Soon after Thomas Edison's invention of the phonograph, the earliest attempts to make a clock that incorporated a voice were made. It may present the time solely as sounds, such as a phone-based time service (see " Speaking clock") or a clock for the visually impaired, or may have a sound feature in addition to an analog or digital face.Īlthough they would not be considered to be speaking, clocks have incorporated noisemakers such as clangs, chimes, gongs, melodies, and the sounds of cuckoos or roosters from almost the beginning of the mechanical clock. 1971 Panasonic Tele-Talk FM-AM Talking Clock RadioĪ talking clock (also called a speaking clock and an auditory clock) is a timekeeping device that presents the time as sounds. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Bordeaux clarets were light and almost pink in color, as opposed to their competition, Burgundian Pinot Noir, which was dense, fruity and deeply colored. For instance, it’s known as Côt in the Loire Valley, Malbec or Malbec Doux in Gironde, Luckens or Lutkens in Médoc, Pressac in the Libourne area of Bordeaux, Côte Rouge in Entre-deux-Mers and Lot-et-Garonne, and Auxerrois or Côt Noir in Cahors, capital of the former province of Quercy. In the mid 1960s, the French ampelographer Pierre Galet identified more than a thousand different terms for Malbec depending on where it was grown or whomever introduced it to the region in question. Malbec’s long, eventful history in France is reflected in the number of different names it was given over the years. It is impossible to deny the grape’s glorious European past. This would be all well and good if it weren’t for the fact that Malbec has been so extensively documented in France’s wine bibliography. And those who know a little more about its history see the grape as an immigrant whose splendid adaptation makes her Argentine through and through. In Argentina, many people think of Malbec as a local variety. Today, it’s now Argentina’s most important grape.Excerpt from Malbec Mon Amour. It was first planted by a nostalgic French botanist in 1868 who hoped to improve wine quality in the region. The grape really didn’t rise to fame until it was brought into Mendoza, Argentina. Malbec is an important blending grape in Bordeaux but, because of its poor resistance to fungal diseases and pests, it never surfaced as a top grape. The thick-skinned grape was a natural cross of two esoteric varieties: Prunelard from Gaillac and Magdeleine des Charentes from Montpellier (the mother of Merlot!). Malbec, which is also called Côt (“coat”) or “Auxxerois,” comes from Sud-Ouest, France. Cahors on the left and Uco Valley on the right. Outside of Argentina, look to Cahors, France and Walla Walla on the Oregon / Washington border. Region Specific: The Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo in Mendoza consistently produce top-rated Malbec wines. Also, residual sugar is little to none (less than 1 g/L). Tech Notes: Acidity (sourness) is usually between 5–7 g/L and pH ranges from 3.65–3.75 in the top-rated wines we found tech sheets on. It’s not uncommon to see quality Malbec wines age for 15–24 months prior to release (regardless of whether it’s oaked or neutral oak/tank-aged). Typically, the more time a wine spends in the cellar, the higher investment the winery is making into giving the wine ample time to develop before it hits the market. Here’s what to look for when seeking out high quality Malbec wine:Įxtended Aging: Good Malbec can handle cellar aging. Malbec grows particularly well in sunny climates with cool nighttime temperatures. When you compare that to the icon wines of Burgundy – which start at $250,– Malbec offers incredible quality for the price. The icon producers in Sub Regions of Mendoza charge well above $100 a bottle, but you can find top-quality Malbec for around $50 from lesser-known producers. Extended aging (in tank or oak), brings out rich chocolatey flavors and velvety textures. This is what you should expect to spend for higher-end reserva, or select vineyard wines from high-quality producers of all sizes. Entry level wines, which are usually produced in large quantities, tend to focus on Malbec’s smooth, juicy-fruity style without much oak. There are essentially three unofficial quality tiers of Malbec from Argentina based on price. Price Quality Pyramid of Malbec Wines in 2017 How Much Should I Spend? Affordable Malbec wines may only get 4–6 months in oak whereas, top-shelf Malbec get as much as 18–20 months in oak. Malbec is so fruity and smooth, it often doesn’t need as much oak-aging. Mark your calendars! World Malbec Day is April 17th (add wine days to your calendar – iCal link).Malbec is a blending grape in Red Bordeaux Blends. Single-varietal Malbec wines are tasty, but be sure to try a Malbec blend with Cabernet Sauvignon. Malbec struggles to maintain acidity in lower elevations but does fabulously in higher elevation spots where there is a large diurnal temperature shift (cold nights and sunny days). Blind tasting clue! One of Malbec’s classic “tells” in blind tasting is its bright magenta rim and opaque purple color.Today, Malbec makes up three quarters of Argentina’s vineyards and is spread throughout the world. Before Argentina took on Malbec, it was just a minor grape in South-West France. These skins have high levels of the color pigment (anthocyanin). Sunshine helps ripen Malbec’s thick skins. It is a great choice with leaner red meats (ostrich anyone?) and does wonders with melted blue cheese. Try pairing it with a burger! by Mikko Kuhna Blue cheese brings out the fruitiness in Malbec. He can make high and long jumps, become invisible, throws grenades and swipes at the player if they are too close to him. He is quite unscrupulous, as shown close to the end of the game, where he brutally kicks Carver out of a helicopter dozens of meters up in the air onto a nightmare island infested with Trigens, then tosses him a gun with only 10 bullets as a joke. Whilst barely appearing early on in the game, he is mentioned a lot by the mercenaries, who often call him crazy or weird. Krieger has grey hair and wears a purple suit. He dies in Volcano, the final level of the first game. The basic, twelve-spoke color wheel is an important tool in creating color schemes. Below are the traditional schemes, with a few examples for each. There are a number of predefined color scheme standards that make creating new schemes easier, especially for beginners. These are important terms to know as we move forward and create our own color schemes. In part 2, we covered color terminology: hue (what color something is, like blue or red) chroma (how pure a color is, the lack of white, black or gray added to it) saturation (the strength or weakness of a color) value (how light or dark a color is) tone (created by adding gray to a pure hue) shade (created by adding black to a pure hue) and tint (created by adding white to a hue). The colors you choose can work for or against the brand identity you’re trying to create. These meanings have a direct impact on the way your visitors perceive your site, sometimes consciously and sometimes subconsciously. In part 1, we talked about how all colors have inherent meanings, which can vary depending on the country or culture. Let’s start with a quick review of what was covered in parts 1 and 2.
